🌍 Geography & 🏛️ History
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania, located in the Indian Ocean. It consists of two main islands: Unguja (commonly called Zanzibar) and Pemba, along with several smaller islets. Unguja is the most visited and home to the historic Stone Town. Zanzibar has a rich and complex history. It was a major center for the spice trade and the slave trade. Influences from Arab, Persian, Indian, and European cultures shaped its identity. The Sultanate of Oman once ruled it, and it later became a British protectorate before uniting with Tanganyika to form Tanzania in 1964.

Islam is the dominant religion in Zanzibar, practiced by over 95% of the population. You’ll find beautiful mosques across the island, and you may hear the call to prayer throughout the day. Respect for local customs and dress codes is appreciated, especially in towns and villages. Zanzibar’s culture is a blend of African, Arab, and Indian influences. Music is huge especially Taarab and Bongo Flava. You’ll also find unique architecture, traditional clothing, and incredible local dishes like Zanzibar pizza, pilau rice, and seafood curries.

The currency used is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US dollars 💵 are also accepted in many tourist spots. ATMs are available in main towns, and it's helpful to carry cash for small purchases. Not all places accept credit or debit cards.

Dry Season (Best Time to Visit)

Long rains: From March to May, Zanzibar experiences its heaviest rainfall. The island becomes lush and green, but some days can be very wet, and some hotels close temporarily during this period.

Swahili (Kiswahili) is the official language, and English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Learning a few words like “Jambo” (Hello) and “Asante” (Thank you) goes a long way and is always appreciated by locals. Zanzibar uses East Africa Time (UTC+3). There's no daylight saving time, so the time stays the same all year.
